Geography

The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together. Barack Obama

‘Geography underpins a lifelong “conversation” about the earth as the home of humankind.’  (Geography Association)

It is is about Earth's land, water, air, and living things—particularly people. The word comes from the Greek geo, which means “Earth,” and graphy, which means “writing or description.” Physical geographers study landforms, water, soil, and climate. They also study the distribution of living things.

At St Paul's Catholic Primary School, VA, we love learning about Geography. Our knowledge-based curriculum, based on a 'spiral' planning strategy, enables the children to explore a range of key topics in a fun and exciting way.

Geography is split into the following strands:

Locational Knowledge

Place Knowledge

Human and Physical Geography

Geographical skills and fieldwork.

We aim to develop children's long-term knowledge in Geography by building on previous concepts and constantly reviewing learning. We refer to this at St Paul's Catholic Primary School as 'Sticky Knowledge'. We also prioritise the development of key vocabulary and technical language.

Knowledge Organisers are used in all classes to help children and parents learn together.
