Classification has been the first topic we have studied in Year 6. How all living things are sorted and classified involves really complex language and the children have worked hard to understand and apply it. We have discovered that we can use the terms of classification in nearly every discussion we have in class, and equally in the world of sweets. After looking at plants and animals, observing their similarities and differences, we put our skills into action with a huge variety of sweets and set about sorting them. Much fun was had by the children and they were quite clear on the species of sweets we found in our classroom (jelly tots and wine gums were just some species discovered).
