NSPPC Number Day Summer 1

We did lots of great Maths activities to raise money for the NSPCC on Number Day! But that wasn't enough for Year 2 and they've started teaching part of the Maths lessons too! Luckily they're doing a great job!

PSHE : Ten:ten and Mindmate Summer 1

Exploring our Feelings

In PSHE, we have been thinking about our likes and dislikes and the different ways we show our emotions. We are exploring how to recognise and regulate our emotions.

Traction Man Summer 1

We are reading Traction Man in English this half term. We have done some fantastic drama work with Northern Arts which is really helping us with our writing.

Computing Summer 1

In our current computing topic we are learning all about spreadsheets! We have been having fun discovering how to populate cells with numbers, pictures and colours and working out how to use our spreadsheets to calculate and count.

For this year's World Book Day, (a week later than normal due to lockdown) we looked at the book 'Where the Wild Things Are' and created our own 'wild things' and then made fact files about them. We also shared stories with each other and generally immersed ourselves in the wonderfulness of books! (And of course, we dressed up!)

Lockdown 2021

Although most of us were at home during the lockdown, we still worked hard and produced some wonderful work!

Design and Technology: Structures

We thoroughly enjoyed finding out about buildings all over the world; looking at the emergence of skyscrapers; researching how we can build structures; and then designing and building our own, before evaluating our work.

6th November 2020

Welcome back to our second half term in Year 2!

Thank you to all the parents for facilitating your child’s learning at home at the start of this week. I can appreciate how difficult it must have been trying to manage your child’s learning at home as well as working yourselves. I know Mr Bowker will be seeking your feedback but please let me know if there’s anything that could be improved or would be helpful and also what worked well.

When we returned to school yesterday, we started our new English text, The Great Explorer, about a boy who goes to find his dad who has gone missing in the North Pole. The children continued to practice writing question sentences and answered some of my questions about the text too.

In Maths, we’re starting to look at adding and subtracting when crossing tens. So we’re really having to make sure that we know our number bonds to and within ten.

We found out all about the history of November 5th yesterday and created some firework artwork. Then this afternoon, we took our Science lesson outside to learn about food chains, with the children being predators or prey in a game of foxes and rabbits.

Have a lovely weekend everyone and make the most of getting outside and enjoying the Autumn sunshine!

16th October 2020

I'm very pleased to say that we've had two weeks in a row of 100% attendance. Well done Year 2!

In English, we have finished looking at 'Little Red' and are now reading 'Izzy Gizmo and the Invention Convention'. Having met some of the characters from the book yesterday, we wrote some diary entries from their point of view today, which we will edit and try to improve next week.

We have been learning that subtraction is the inverse of addition, in Maths this week, and using this fact to help us to check that calculations are correct.

We've been making the most of using the Ipads this week, using them in both our Art and Science lessons. You can see what we've been up to on the photos below.

You'll also see that some of the children have been helping me out by doing some teaching in one of our Maths lesson! All the children were fantastic and showed their brilliant Maths understanding by explaining what to do to the rest of the class.

Have a great weekend everyone!

25th September 2020

We've had a wonderful week this week in Year 2: the whole class managed to get on gold as everyone has been working hard and behaving brilliantly!

In English, we having been stirring up some noun phrases to use in our own poems about some marvellous medicine, inspired by George's Marvellous Medicine. We have also been revising the different phonemes that make the long vowel (a e i o u) sounds.

Our work in Maths lessons has been all about place value and understanding how many tens and ones are in a number and all about the days of the week. In Geography, we have been thinking about human features and physical features in the UK and the difference between them and we have been thoroughly enjoying exploring the world using Google Earth!

We've linked our art and RE work this week by using our shading and toning skills to paint the lions in Daniel's den.

That's all for this week. Enjoy your weekend!

Welcome to Year 2!

We have had a wonderful start to the new school year! The children have returned to school with a fabulous attitude and have quickly settled down to the new routines.

Over the last week and a half, we have been revising all the phonics that the class learned last year. We have also been reading George’s Marvellous Medicine together and on Friday did lots of Roald Dahl based activities, in celebration of Roald Dahl day, which is September 13th.

In Geography this term, we are exploring our local area and comparing it with Rotorua in New Zealand’s North Island. We’re very lucky to have some pen pals in Tauranga, which is about an hour away from Rotorua. All the children received a postcard from a child in Year 3 at Pillans Point Primary School and we have written a letter back to them. It took a couple of months for our postcards to arrive from them - I wonder how long our letters will take
